Service Merchandise was a chain of large stores where various fine jewelry, toys, sporting goods, and electronics were available. This store existed from 1934 to 2002. The former chairman of the company, Raymond Zimmerman revived Service Merchandise as an Internet-only retailer in 2004 after buying the name and logo of the store at auction. He later forwarded the website to another online jewelry store.
Service Merchandise was founded by Harry and Mary Zimmerman in the year 1934. The first showroom opened in 1960 on Broadway in downtown Nashville. During the 1970s, Service Merchandise became one of the top catalog showroom retailer.

As the company expanded its business, it began to open showrooms all over the country. During the1980s, the Service Merchandise headquarters were moved from Nashville to nearby Brentwood, Tennessee.
Service Merchandise gradually lost business to competitors like Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Service Merchandise continued to be the largest watch retailer in the United States until it closed down. Service Merchandise later adopted Internet in the mid-1990s as a medium of doing business, on both the internal as well as retail levels.
Service Merchandise responded to its miserable condition with a number of plans that included the stoppage of unprofitable product items like electronics, toys and sporting goods. Service Merchandise decided to focus on fine jewelry, gifts, and home decoration products. The company divided many of the company owned buildings into two or three parcels and then rented away the new space to other national chain retailers.
Service Merchandise resurfaced on the World Wide Web in the year 2004. After its revival. They are selling a similar line of products. After Raymond Zimmerman bought the former company's name and logo and he continues to be the owner of the newly formed company. Service Merchanise has succeeded to be a prominent name among the online jewelry stores.
