The DeLong Star Ruby which is at present in Natural History Museum in New York City is one category of Star rubies, a very precious stone. Ruby is derived from Latin word ruber meaning red.
Color:
Rubies usually vary in color from pinkish to orangey, purplish to brownish depending on the iron and chromium content in them. The color of Star rubies differs when viewed from different directions.
Rubies are generally regarded as the birthstone for those born in July.

Location:
Some of the famous places having rich deposits of rubies are:
- Myanmar Myanmar is supposed to be the place associated with large deposits of rubies although only one percent of the available quantity is of gem quality.
- Thailand Chanthaburi district of Thailand have rich source of rubies whose color ranges from brown to violet tint.
- Sri Lanka Rubies varying from light to raspberry red are found in Ratnapura district of Sri Lanka.
- Tanzania Rubies of gemstone quality ranging from violet to brownish red are available in upper Umba river region of Northwest Tanzania.
Rubies are also available in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Kenya and Vietnam.
Treatment:
Rubies are first heated from 1700 to 1800 degree Celsius in order to improve the saturation of color. Diffusion treatment is done to expose the surface of the stone to a combination of heat and certain chemicals. This increases the star effect of the rubies though the hardness remains unaffected.

The DeLong Star Ruby
The DeLong Star Ruby weighing 100.32 carat, oval in shape was discovered in Burma in the twentieth century. The ruby was stolen by Jack Murphy and his two associates. Recovered with a ransom of $25,000 the ruby was obtained from a designated spot a phone booth in Florida.
